Glen Canyon and Horse Shoe Bend

I am so behind in writing about my spring break road trip - this should be the last post about it! There were so many great things about the experience it's almost difficult to put it all down into words.

Our second destination was  Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, on the East Rim.  We were in the Lee's Ferry area, and though the campsite was fairly primitive, the area was stunning.

The day started off bleak and cold, but it soon warmed up and turned into a perfectly hot and gorgeous day.

The hike we attempted at the beginning of the day was Spencer Trail, rated as "difficult" by the national parks service, as it's up a rather large hill/mountain. It was a challenge, but also so much fun! We were cracking up the whole way to the top.

Literally doubled over in laughter as we made our way up the never ending switchbacks.

Once there, we had another delicious hikers' picnic, and the hike back down was a breeze. Plus.. THE VIEWS. You can see them in some of the photos, but they don't do the scenery justice.

After our long hike, we piled back into the car, and drove down to Horseshoe Bend, about a half hour drive from the campsite. We quietly watched the sun set over this rock formation with several hundred other people. It's certainly a popular spot, but one that is probably more accessible to a wider variety of people. There is a bit of a walk from the car park to the site, but its flat and well marked out.

Overall, the Lee's Ferry area was rather quiet, but it made it that much more special. It's remote as well, but I don't think I'll ever forget staring up at the millions of stars in the sky at night above our campsite. I want to go back.
